One of the first questions my couples ask after booking their engagement session is:
"Where should we take our photos?"
And honestly, I love that question.
Your engagement session should feel like you. It shouldn't just be about choosing a pretty location—it should be about choosing a place that matches your personalities, your relationship, and the overall feel you want your photos to have.

Do you love dressing up and having a more editorial, luxury feel? Do you want something that feels like a cozy date night? Maybe you envision tall grasses blowing in the wind, golden sunsets, or romantic city streets filled with movement and energy.
The good news is that Grand Rapids offers all of that and more.
After photographing engagement sessions throughout West Michigan, these are some of my favorite engagement photo locations in Grand Rapids and why I love them.

The Amway Grand Plaza | Timeless, Elegant & Romantic
If you're dreaming of engagement photos that feel straight out of a classic romance movie, the historic Amway Grand Plaza is one of my absolute favorite locations.
The moment you walk into the historic Pantlind side of the hotel, you're surrounded by grand staircases, vintage architecture, ornate details, chandeliers, and timeless elegance. Originally built in 1913, the hotel has maintained much of its historic charm and architectural beauty, making it one of the most iconic buildings in downtown Grand Rapids.

What I love most about the Amway is how luxurious the photos feel without trying too hard. The grand staircase creates the perfect backdrop for romantic portraits, while the historic details make every image feel timeless.
This location is perfect for couples who:
Love a more upscale aesthetic
Want editorial-inspired photos
Are planning a luxury wedding
Love vintage architecture
Want something unique regardless of the season
Best Outfit Choice: Dressy attire. Think long dresses, heels, suit jackets, and elevated date-night look

Downtown Grand Rapids | For Couples Who Want Their Photos to Feel Like a Date Night
There's something special about downtown engagement sessions.
They feel less like a photoshoot and more like an experience.
Instead of standing in one location the entire time, we can walk around together, explore the city, stop at different spots, and create photos that feel natural and candid.
One of my favorite things about downtown Grand Rapids is the variety. Within a short walk we can photograph:
Historic architecture
Brick alleyways
Sidewalk cafés
River views
The Blue Bridge
City lights
Modern buildings
Hidden corners full of character
Every turn creates a completely different backdrop.
For couples who say they feel awkward in front of the camera, downtown is often the perfect solution because it gives us something to do. Walking, talking, laughing, crossing streets, and simply spending time together creates movement and genuine moments.
Many of my favorite engagement galleries have come from simply wandering downtown and letting the city become part of the story.
Best Outfit Choice: One dressy outfit and one casual outfit for variety.
Grand Ravines Park | The Best of Nature Without Leaving the City
If you love the look of wide open fields and natural scenery but don't necessarily want to drive hours outside of Grand Rapids, Grand Ravines Park is such a hidden gem.
One of my favorite things about this location is the variety it offers.
Depending on where we shoot, you can get:
Tall grasses
Open fields
Wooded trails
Beautiful natural light
Rustic barn elements
Open sky views
For couples who love a more organic and relaxed feel, Grand Ravines photographs beautifully throughout every season.

The tall grass especially becomes stunning during late summer and early fall when everything starts to glow during golden hour.
This location is perfect for couples who want that "field session" aesthetic without feeling completely isolated.
It feels romantic, effortless, and timeless.
Best Outfit Choice: Flowy dresses, neutral colors, boots, layered outfits.

Millennium Park | Golden Hour Heaven

If you ask me where I would choose for sunset engagement photos, Millennium Park is always near the top of the list.
As one of the largest urban parks in West Michigan, Millennium Park offers an incredible mix of water, trails, bridges, open spaces, and beautiful sunset light.
The bridges throughout the park add so much variety to an engagement gallery and create beautiful leading lines that naturally draw attention to the couple.
But my favorite part?
Golden hour.
When the sun starts dropping lower in the sky and the light becomes soft and warm, Millennium Park absolutely shines. The way the sunlight reflects across the water and filters through the trees creates the kind of romantic glow every couple dreams about.

This location is perfect for couples who:
Love nature
Want sunset photos
Want a variety of backgrounds
Prefer a relaxed atmosphere
Want romantic golden-hour portraits
Best Outfit Choice: Soft neutrals, flowy dresses, earth tones.

How to Choose the Right Engagement Session Location
The best engagement session location isn't necessarily the most popular one.
It's the one that feels like you.
If you love luxury and timeless elegance, the Amway Grand Plaza may be perfect.
If you want a session that feels like a fun date night, downtown Grand Rapids is hard to beat.
If you love nature and open fields, Grand Ravines might be exactly what you're looking for.
And if you're dreaming of golden sunlight and romantic sunset photos, Millennium Park is always a beautiful choice.
No matter which location you choose, the goal isn't just beautiful photos.
It's creating images that remind you exactly what this season of life felt like before you said "I do."
And those are always the photos that matter most.
